What competitive intelligence means for a modern business

Competitive intelligence is the practice of systematically identifying, tracking, and understanding the businesses actually competing for your customers' attention — not just the ones you assume are your competitors. In 2026, that means going beyond a Google search or a SEMrush report. It means mapping real audience overlap, tracking live organic content strategy, and understanding where your positioning has gaps a competitor is quietly filling.

Traditional competitive research takes weeks and produces PDFs that go stale before they land in the inbox. Recon delivers actionable competitive intelligence in under 4 hours — scoped to your specific business, your vertical, and your geography.

How Recon identifies your real competitors

Recon does not rely on a static database. Every engagement runs live — here is how competitors surface:

What Recon does NOT use to identify competitors: paid-media expenditure estimates. Every third-party estimate of another company's advertising activity is a modeled guess. We do not build competitor identification on modeled guesses.

What Recon delivers per competitor

Posting cadence

Publishing frequency and platform mix across the last 30–90 days — not last quarter's snapshot.

Review velocity

Rate of new public reviews, direction of sentiment shift, and category-level review-volume percentile.

Organic content mix

Content-format breakdown — video vs static, educational vs promotional vs UGC-reshare — and what is actually working.

Years in business

Founding-date verification, entity history, and market vintage compared to yours.

Decision-maker footprint

Who is the public face — founder, marketing lead, comms voice — and how visible is that footprint on professional platforms.

Positioning gaps

Concrete gaps between your positioning and theirs that a serious buyer would notice within 60 seconds of comparing.

What Recon does NOT deliver — and why

No ad-expenditure numbers, no paid-media budget estimates, no share-of-paid-voice.

Every tool that publishes estimates of what other businesses spend on advertising is producing a modeled guess based on partial signals — sampled traffic, scraped ad libraries, or vendor-supplied panels. Those numbers are wrong more often than they are right, and they are wrong in ways that do not disclose their uncertainty. We refuse to put a modeled advertising-expenditure guess in a deliverable that a CEO will make a decision on. That is not the same category of intelligence as observed public behavior, and we do not blur the two.

If knowing a competitor's exact paid-media budget is critical to your decision, you need a different vendor (or you need to accept that you are buying a guess). Recon's discipline: everything in the report is tagged OBSERVED, ESTIMATED, INFERRED, or RECOMMENDED — and paid-media expenditure never gets an OBSERVED tag because it cannot be directly observed from outside a business's ad accounts.

Recon vs SEMrush, SimilarWeb, Crunchbase

SEMrush and SimilarWeb are subscription tools that estimate advertising expenditure, keyword rank, and traffic share — typically $500–$2,000/month, delivered as a self-service dashboard your team learns to query. Crunchbase is a company database primarily useful for funding history and entity mapping. Recon is a different category: we do not estimate paid spend (we refuse to), we do not require you to run the queries yourself, and we deliver in hours not days. Use the subscription tools for continuous keyword monitoring; use Crunchbase for funding history; use Recon when a founder, marketing leader, or agency principal needs a delivered, subject-specific competitive read they can put in front of a decision-maker today. Recon is $99–$599 one-time or subscription — not $500–$2,000/month per seat.
